For the fist time there was a Raniag Twilight Festival in Vigan City, Philippines, and the highlight will be the release of 252 Wish Lanterns. Each of the lanterns was released by a public official as well as sector representative in order to indicate unity of the local government.
This celebration of life was celebrated on All Soul’s Day where traditionally people thank the Lord for their life and in remembrance of the dead. It’s a way of looking back on the past and enjoying the memory of the departed as well as acknowledging the beauty of life.
There was a spectacular street parade which included performers wearing various Halloween costumes and you could hear them singing Ilokano songs as they passed by. The idea of this beautiful festival was brought about in order to bring more visitors and tourists during All Soul’s Day and to promote the culture and beautiful celebration.
It was a beautiful display of culture and the release of the wish lanterns offered a wonderful way to communicate thanksgiving and respect and prayers for the departed. This is the first festival that has used wish lanterns in Luzon and after such a successful outcome surely it won’t be the last.
