“Love must be as much a light, as it is a flame” – Henry David Thoreau
When planning your reception, you need to worry about a lot of things and nobody said planning a wedding was easy but one thing not to overlook is the lighting. The lighting you choose can make or break the environment you’re looking for whether it’s romantic candles, fairytale stars, bold pin lighting, washes of bright color or glowing balls floating in the sky.
Candles are always romantic and create a lovely amber glow and flatter everybody but are they the best choice for you? If your wedding is outdoors, consider the wind factor. Candles can still be used outdoors but you may want to choose lanterns or candle holders that protect the flame. You could place them in the sand, in the grass, on the tables or hang them from above in the trees. The possibilities are endless.
Candles work with any theme wedding. Try an old fashion glass and metal lantern for a rustic woodsy theme or delicate frosted balls with tea light candles for a romantic dreamy theme or try clear simple glass candleholders with small white candles for a minimalistic approach.
One of our favorite looks is the surreal floating lanterns let free against a night sky. But you can also find paper lanterns that don’t float away for a more lasting effect on your special night, which can be strung about through the trees for an outdoor wedding or along poles or the underside of a tent if trees aren’t a major theme in your wedding.
Forget florescent lights and the terribly bright lights that find a way to make everybody look bad. Electricity gives us more options in the form of color, shape and focus. While electric lights also work for every wedding reception the choices get more complex and are better left to the advice of a specialist.
Some electric lights we love are the round ball of twine lamps that have several LED lights throughout to create a glowing radiance overhead. LED lighting can also be used to string up behind thin fabrics to give the appearance of stars in the sky or along the walls.
Wash lighting is another style we love that’s perfect for weddings with a plain ceiling or walls. They can focus the light in a specific area, in any direction and they offer patterns and colors. These lights need to be installed so you’ll need to check with your venue about using these.
When choosing your lighting you may decide to select both electric lighting and candle lighting but keep in mind that electric lighting might be more expensive than candles. Be sure to ask your venue about lighting, some that specialize in weddings may already have lighting choices to choose from.
